The Policy
"It shall be the policy
of the State Center Community College District to recruit and
hire highly qualified college faculty who are expert in their
subject areas, who are skilled in serving the needs of a culturally
and ethnically diverse student population served by the District,
and who can enhance the overall college effectiveness. Excellence
in teaching, expertise in subject matter, positive personality
traits, leadership ability, and a commitment to both students
and the community college philosophy are indispensable characteristics."
- State Center Community College District Board of Trustees

The Process
Once a vacancy is determined (either a new position is approved or a retirement is accepted), a vacancy notice is prepared describing the position, the salary, and benefit package. The announcement is mailed out and circulated within the District for posting. Advertisements are placed in local and national periodicals relevant to the subject area. Additionally, the position is listed on the web page. As the position is advertised, the department sets up a screening committee comprised primarily of faculty members from the subject area, the administrator over the area and a Diversity Committee representative. Because committee members must arrange committee duties around their regular responsibilities, it generally takes several weeks to go through the entire process.
All applicants must either contact the Human Resources Office or request from our website an applicant packet which will include the vacancy announcement, application forms, and information explaining the paperwork needed by the filing deadline. Postmarks are NOT acceptable. Faxes are fine, but prior planning on the part of the applicant is required due to the volume of faxed materials being sent in at deadlines.
All of the following materials must be received by the filing deadline indicated on this job announcement. It is helpful to include a cover letter with your paperwork listing the materials you are enclosing. Fax copies are acceptable, however, we cannot be held responsible for equipment and/or fax line failure. Please do not submit your materials in a binder or any other jacket. It is recommended that you keep a copy of all submitted materials for your records.
- A complete Academic Employment Application must be submitted for each position for which you are applying.
- A Letter of Application explaining your experience as it relates to each item listed under the desirable qualifications on this job announcement. You may address your letter to: Selection Committee, SCCCD, 1525 E. Weldon Avenue, Fresno, CA 93704.
- A Resume and/or placement file. Placement files are sent directly, at your request, from a university or college you attended.
- Copies of all graduate and undergraduate transcripts. Degrees acquired outside the U.S. must be accompanied by an evaluation service assessment. A list of approved assessment agencies can be found at www.ed.gov under the National Council on the Evaluation of Foreign Academic Credentials section.
If your degree is (degrees are) not exactly as stated in the minimum qualifications paragraph of the job announcement but you believe you possess equivalent qualifications, or, if the required degree is (degrees are) not posted on your transcript(s) at the time of application, you must complete the Petition for Equivalency Form. This petition will be forwarded to a review board and a determination will be made before you are allowed to proceed in the selection process. Failure to complete this form, when needed, will result in an incomplete application that will not be sent to the selection committee.
- A minimum of three letters of recommendation (unless three such up-to-date references are included in a placement file) are required. The letters should be written by persons having firsthand knowledge of your professional qualifications, experience, abilities, and character and should be dated no more than three years prior to the filing deadline.
Applications will be checked to determine if all necessary paperwork has been submitted. Applicant files will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement. Those files that have incomplete paperwork and/or do not meet minimum qualifications will not be considered for employment. As the selection committee eliminates applicants from consideration and returns their files to the Human Resources Department, letters are sent out informing them that they are no longer being considered. From the applicants who meet the basic qualifications, a selection committee will determine the candidates that meet the highest degree of desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview. Interviewees may be asked to conduct a short teaching demonstration.
The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions and the teaching demonstration (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President or Vice Chancellor and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
Note to current SCCCD employees:
Please be aware that materials from your personnel file are not included as part of the application file. You must contact Human Resources to request copies of materials in your employment or previous applicant file. Your paperwork can be copied one time only.
