The Grants Office, Business Department, Human Resources, Faculty,
and Administration, all play roles.

Macro Groups
May not be part of writing itself, but influences
grant development process
Fenders, community members/organizations, non-grant faculty, and
administration are examples.

Administration and
Faculty
Important part of the grant development is faculty
involvement. They will be able to provide valuable input in the
grant writing process.
Electronic Notices
of Intent (NOI) and the grants office newsletter keeps faculty/administration
informed. Feedback from these two groups may influence undertaking
of a grant, or alter programmatic elements. The object is inclusion
of both faculty and administration.

Micro Groups
Micro-groups prepare the grant application which
includes: completing research, writing grant sections, budget development,
etc. They also define task assignments, timelines, and communication
channels. Optimally these groups will include the Grants Office,
Finance, Human Resources, and Faculty. Each of these may enter the
grants application process at different stages of development. Some
basic responsibilities of these groups may include the following:
Grants Office roles- evaluate RFP; develop initial
grant outline; convene and coordinate development meetings; move
grant through finance, legal, HR, etc.; communicate with macro groups;
keep process on task.
- Faculty roles- define initial program elements;
identify data sources; communicate with other department faculty
and departments.
- Finance roles- review RFP for financial elements
and requirements (e.g., matching funds); review other applicable
documents (OMB circulars, etc.); assist in developing a line-item
budget for the application, including matching and indirect.
- Human Resources roles- assist in defining proposed
grant positions; provides salary ranges of proposed positions,
establishes timetables for hiring grant-funded personnel.

Final Phases
Hold a final debriefing to discuss what went well,
and what was not successful to bring closure to the grant writing
process. You may want to begin to plan for future grant development
activities and timelines at this point.
