Elements of a Grant

  1. The Writing Process
    • Find funding source through Grants Office newsletter, Web, or other sources

    • Obtain Request for Proposal (RFP, RFA), from potential funder(s) and evaluate for compatibility with project

    • Contact Grants Office with RFP and develop writing team

    • Complete Notice of Intent (NOI) process; establish timelines

    • Last draft completed 5 days before mailing date

  2. Proposal Components
    • Abstract -done last

    • Table of Contents -very important; MUST include ALL elements to be evaluated by funder

    • Need Section-defines problem; data driven

    • Goals/Objectives Section-defines project activities and ultimate outcomes; objectives MUST be measurable, time-specific, and in keeping with overall goals of the project

    • Management/Personnel/Organization Section-defines roles and responsibilities for project activities

    • Budget Section-clearly defines resources needed to accomplish the project; MUST follow format in RFP; MUST include indirect and matching where appropriate; project sustainability is an important element to include

    • Evaluation Section-should include both objective (data-driven) and subjective (personal) measurements

    • Dissemination Section-how will let folks know about the results of your project; should include in-house and external methods

    • Appendices-add when requested or to enhance information in the narrative; it must be easy to move from attachment s to narrative
